Lj's Scrapbook is acting up- dunno if I'll be able to post tomorrow if it gets worse. I couldn't use the 'post' button I normally do, since it did nothing, and after I posted I discovered that although I'd selected for it to include a clickable link to open the full size image in a new tab, nothing happens.
*sigh* LJ bragged about a beta version just released, which has https (which it used to have before they moved the servers to Russia). I guess they messed up Scrapbook at the same time.
The thing about designing tee-shirt messages, is that if I want to sell them, I (or the Internet vendor I'm selling through) need to have the copyright to the font, as well -- not just the wording. So this is an experiment in designing my own letters.
I'll probably reuse this for the rest of the month, as I experiment with different ways to color it.
I really like this! The little decorative shapes are like designs you sometimes see painted on a certain style of furniture, and some of them also look like musical notes. I think the letters have a good balance of black and white within each one.
I did not know that copyright fact about fonts. Are there free-use fonts, like the copyright-free background music people can put in their Youtube videos?
Not that I've found... the fonts that are installed on your computer are sold with a copyright contract for personal and internal business use -- or you can buy a Web license for online pages, etc (and some fonts have been specifically designed for clarity on monitors, but don't look as good on paper). But if you want to use the font on something you're later going to sell for profit, you have to buy a commercial license)
Zazzle (where I have my current store, and where I'm thinking of starting a fresh one) has a whole passel of fonts you can choose from and mix and match, which are highly decorative / graphic (with names like "funky robot" or "rusty punk"). And I will probably end up using those a lot of the time. But with that choice, I can't play with colors within the letters, like I did with this Na'Art from a couple years ago.
So... If I have a design idea that calls for that, I either have to choose a font that Zazzle has a license to sell that I also have on my personal computer (or buy that font for myself) or design my own. I don't have the skill to create an entire font. But I can make up some letters that fit a single word or phrase for a single use.
Thanks so much! I woke up in the night unsure if I'd posted or not, but didn't come awake enough to do anything about it, and I haven't been at the computer until now. I hoped someone would step in for me!
I have been drawing yet more ellipses - trying to draw three of different sizes but the same proportions on a single axis, and stuff like that. If I don't feel artistic, I can at least do some mechanical skill-building.

Date: 2017-08-26 01:33 pm (UTC)N.B dafont has copyright free fonts but they are mixed in with ones that do want paying if you use their fonts for commercial use.
